You’re overseas. You’re in a strange place. You don’t know many people. And you’ve lost your passport.

Okay, don’t panic. This can happen to anyone. There are ways to get a replacement passport sent to you so you can get on with your trip and eventually back to your home country.

What you need to do is find your countries embassy. These are normally located in every major city or state capital. The Embassy or the Consulate will be a large building. They will speak your home countries language and will be able to give you the forms so you can get a new passport.

You will need to report your passport stolen or missing and it will become invalid. So, even if you do find it a few days later, it is still useless.

The Stolen or Lost Passport Process: Applying for a New One
No matter what country you are in, or what nationally you are, the passport procedure will be the same as your home country. This usually includes an application form, a processing fee, two passport sized photos and certain declarations and signatures.

The Embassy can direct you to a place to get your passport pictures taken and can also help you with the forms. However, one of the tricky parts is finding a Justice of the Peace to sign your form. You can usually pay a hefty fee and your Embassy will help you with the documentation.

You can expect a similar processing time when overseas. For Canadian residents, this may be three weeks, for British residents this is 10-14 days. In some cases the passports are issued even earlier overseas because there are fewer passports to process.

How Not to Lose your Passport: Tips for Travelers
There are certain precautions you can take when you are traveling to ensure that this does not happen to you. First of all, invest in a passport protector. These leather bound wallet-sized protectors will keep your passport from becoming damaged. If your passport is looking worse for wear, it may be considered invalid and you will have to replace it before traveling on.

Next, keep your passport in a safe place. Many people put their passport in a secret zipper up pocket in their jacket of built in to their boxer shorts. This may seem a little extreme but, in some countries, you cannot be too careful.

When you go out partying, leave your passport in a safe area and opt to use different identification instead. If you happen to lose your driver’s license, you can replace it when you get home. It is not so simple when it comes to your passport.
