Procedures for Applying For UK Passport

Application Uk passport Office

For many young people, traveling abroad on a Scout visit is the first time that they will need a passport. There are two different types of passport from which to choose Standard British Passport and Collective Passport.

The Standard British Passport is probably the easiest procedure to follow with the added advantage of being available for use more than once. There are two types of standard passport. Where the applicant is aged sixteen years or over they should apply for an adult passport that lasts ten years. Where the applicant is under sixteen they should apply for a child’s passport that lasts five years.

The Collective Passport issued for each application. It is issued for a group of British
Nationals, under the leadership of one adult person provided the group remains together for the duration of the trip. Each named person, under 18 years of age, on the Collective Passport must carry a Collective passport photo card bearing a photograph of the holder.

Collective Passports have the advantage of removing the need for close security of individual. Passports and the inconvenience and expense of replacing lost passports while abroad. However not all countries permit collective passports. You may consult the UKPA website for complete list. For the standard British Passport the turn-around time for passport production is three weeks and for collective passports it is four weeks.
The UK Passport Service is currently starting a program to issue passports that contain a chip which stores biometric information about the holder.

It is also advised that you take photocopies of all the leaders’ and participants’ passports before you travel. This will speed up the production of an emergency passport in the event that you visit an Embassy for a replacement passport.

One can apply for a passport at many British embassies, consulates and high commissions. You can also apply to renew your passport while you are visiting the UK. To do this, you need to make an appointment with the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) in person. You must also provide an address in the UK, to enable us to post the passport to you. You will have to be available at this address to sign for your passport.
For residents of UK, the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) deals with all passport applications.

Once you report your passport as lost or stolen, it is electronically cancelled.  You will not be able to use it as a proof of identity, nationality, or for any other legal purpose. You must not use it as identification as this may be detected, and it may be seen as a potential fraud.
If you want to apply for a replacement passport, you must submit a passport application form as well as the LS01 form.
